Anybody in similar situation, or advice?
Hello sisters! Thanks for having me. I would love some advice. As a new revert to islam, i am getting a lot of resistance to allowing me to travel solo and I can’t imagine giving up my solo travel. Im being told its not right and its the law of islam i cannot travel alone as a muslim and my husband family now have become very strict on me since i reverted and its making me wish i didnt even tell them i reverted. I dont know really what im asking for. Maybe if anyone has been in similar situation and has any advice or any ways to win this argument lol. Ugh helpp
Imam on TV said it’s previously haram but the landscape has changed
On a Moroccan TV program, a woman asked an Imam if it was permissible for her to travel alone to South Korea. The Imam responded that while solo female travel was previously considered haram due to safety concerns, advancements in technology and security have changed the landscape. However, he emphasized the importance of researching the specific safety conditions in South Korea before making a decision
Husband, Family & Opinions
I’m a born Muslim and I have always travelled alone. It’s not haram and scholars have different opinions. I know a lot of muslim women and girls in the same situation as me. I think for your family, be economical with the truth. You don’t need to tell them everything. For example, you can say that you’re travelling but you don’t need to say who with or for how long etc. If you feel like that’s going to create problems. Some people want to impose their understanding on others, but bear in mind that these things are not as black and white as some things in Islam.
For example, it’s obvious that alcohol is haram because there are clear texts that prohibit it but there is no text that prohibits women travelling alone (as far as I know). That being said, a woman should obey her husband in Islam so if you’re husband is not ok, maybe you can try and convince him?
Everything in Islam is for our good. Up to how you want to take / apply to your life
Everything in islam is either for our own good or societies good. It was haram because it was not safe. Its mostly safe now depending on where u wanna travel. I believe this and i travel solo to places i feel safe. Someone else can say, it was haram and it can not be changed. Its up to you how u wanna take it and apply to your life.
Important for muslimahs to be independent & to respect family too
Salaam all sisters.
I think It’s important for muslimahs to be independent , and still respecting our family and those close to us.
I’m a doctor….and born muslimah . I can’t imagine not being able to travel alone at times. Yes we should be careful and be safe when travelling alone. We have such good examples of women in Islam who were independent, namely Khadijah, wife of our prophet (pbuh). It’s ABSOLUTELY important to be independent …..and solo travel encourages and teaches us to be independent.
To all sisters….I’m saying this as a born Muslim and a Medical Doctor….aim as high as you can For Your Education , be independent…. You can still be responsible and respectful to your dear family and close ones….
W’salaam everyone
Seek a scholar opinion too
There’s definitely a difference of opinion on this ranging from impermissible to permissible with conditions. I believe the most lenient position is that it is permissible if the travel is deemed safe, but that if a woman can’t or must travel without a mahram it is preferable to travel in the company of righteous people (so women can travel together for example. It’s important to remember that it comes from a place of care and concern for the safety of women. Maybe have a sit down with hubby and family to discuss it and see if you can come to an understanding. I would also definitely advise seeking a scholarly opinion to help the discussion. May Allah make it easy for you
