Plan Your Travels Ahead to Osaka: Choose Your Method Of Transportation!
Ready to explore Osaka? Let’s go together and guide you! If you’re coming in from abroad, most likely you’ll be coming in from Tokyo.
So if you are planning a Japan visit this summer and want to see the EXPO, here are some ways to arrive in Osaka.
Option 1: Go For The Shinkansen
The first on the list is the quickest and most efficient way to depart from Tokyo. That is the Shinkansen (bullet train)! It’s highly recommended for longer distances if you don’t have much time, and much faster than an 8-hour bus journey.
Look for the Tokaido Shinkansen route, as they run from Tokyo Station to Shin-Osaka Station
The three train services which operate on this route are (+ its duration) are:
- Nozomi: ~2.5 hours
- Hikari: ~3 hours
- Kodama: ~4 hours
Departure: Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station – Arrival: Shin-Osaka Station

Save The Hassle By Exploring Kansai with JR PASS!
With the JR Pass, you’ll get UNLIMITED rides on special rapid services, plus it is the best option for hassle-free travels within Kansai region where Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto and Nara are.
We recommend you skip the lines and redeem JR Pass via digital redemption at their ticket machines / offices by purchasing this one from KLOOK
Option 2: Budget-friendly Highway Bus
So, if you are on a budget-friendly trip to Japan, taking a highway bus from Tokyo to Osaka is a viable choice. The journey can take approximately 8 to 10 hours. Overnight buses are available, allowing you to sleep during the trip and save accommodation costs.
However, if you are prone to back pains, we definitely recommend going for the Shinkansen for the Japanese experience.
- Duration: 8 to 10 hours
- Departure: Shinjuku or Tokyo Station – Arrival: Osaka or Namba Station.
- Cost: from $22 to $63 (depending on bus company and seat type).

Tokyo – Osaka via Bus!
Depending on the bus company and seat type, you get options from and to different bus stations
Option 3: Fly Directly To Osaka
And if you are super duper in a hurry, you can fly from Tokyo to Osaka, but we don’t recommend it.
While it might look fast, 1h and 15min, sometimes it can take longer due to airport security.
So you can fly from Haneda (HND) or Narita (NRT) Airport in Tokyo to Kansai International (KIX) or Itami Airport (ITM) in Osaka.
- Flight time: 1H 15min
- Airport security : 3 to 4 hours
- Cost: from $35 up to $140
Tip: To make your visit easier, try not to bring big luggage to the expo. A light bag or small backpack is best so you can move around more comfortably.
